National Sibling’s Day Q&A with Spectrum Collections

10 April 2018

Happy National Sibling’s Day (yes this is really a thing)! We may not always appreciate our siblings, in fact A LOT of the time we feel like this about them:

BUT on the other hand, your siblings are the ones who will ALWAYS have your back.

Aaaaand you’re kind of stuck with them, so you may as well try to get along.

In celebration of National Sibling’s Day we caught up with two sisters who have definitely got each other’s backs – Spectrum Collections founders Hannah and Sophie Pycroft. The sisters and girlboss duo tell us all about what it’s like to run a business with your nearest and dearest…

Where did the idea for Spectrum Collections come from?

It was more of a desire to work together that was the starting point rather than an idea, and that desire paired with the fact that there are so few creative jobs in Wales meant that we ended up starting our own business, to combine the best of both worlds.

How did you get started actually making the brushes?

Google! You literally can find anything on google, so I think we just typed ‘makeup brush manufacturer’ and the rest came from that search. We spent a year speaking to different suppliers and sampling, but finding the right people to speak to was so easy, you just have to persevere as a lot of suppliers won’t even reply, so it’s about patience and time.

Did you always want to go into business with each other?

Yes, always, that’s the main reason we started our own, but before that we were freelancing alongside each other, Sophie as a photographer, Hannah as a videographer, mainly for weddings but for lots of fashion clients too.

What’s the best thing about working with your sister?

We have the same brain so making decisions is really easy and really fun.

And (dare we ask) the worst?

If we’re working on separate projects and we lose touch of what each other are doing, we need to keep constant communication so we’re always on the same page.

Any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?

Don’t start if you think it’s going to be a short road to making money, if your only goal is to get rich it’s not an easy way to do so, you really need to have patience and perseverance to get even close, but if you’ve got the passion and the patience to watch your business grow, it’s the most rewarding thing in the world, and if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life.

And particularly for those considering going into business with family?

Working with family is wonderful, but you have to be friends too, you can’t just be related, you need to really want to work with each other and enjoy each other’s company, you’ll spend so much time together that if you don’t, it won’t work.

Do you have any beauty tips/hacks you can share?

Get lots of sleep and drink lots of water!! But if you’ve been working long hours a flush of blush or sweep of bronze will make you look so much more awake, if you’re running late and only have time for one thing, make this it!

What’s your favourite S&G product?

This has to be the PUFFY EYE ATTACK™ UNDER-EYE MASK, we stare at a computer screen so much as part of our work, and we can’t do without this!

Spectrum gets A LOT of love on social media (not surprising with such beautiful brushes) – do you guys have a favourite Instagram account?

Well actually, we scroll so much we don’t really have a fave, but we do take a lot of inspo from Instagram, we love really colourful accounts such as @afashionnerd and also @labelsforlunch

Labels for Lunch

What song have you got on repeat at the moment?

Camel Phat, Cola.

Fave binge-worthy Netflix series?

We actually love Horror as a genre, we’re currently loving American Horror Story, as it’s a bit avant guard and helps with inspo for an upcoming range…

Where do you most like to eat out?

We love tapas because we share everything, but if we’re in London our go to is Pharmacy in Notting Hill, the menu is so varied and so tasty, we also love Sketch of course, if we’re instagramming our cocktails that’s the place to go.

farmacy and sketch

Any exciting plans for the summer? Events, holidays, festivals?

All of the above! We have so many events this year, we love festivals so we’re hoping to combine one of our events with a festival in the summer, and then we’re both taking a summer holiday, Sophie to Mykonos and Hannah to Dubai, we’re actually going separately!!

Aaand finally, what’s next for Spectrum?

The best is definitely yet to come, but we’re not allowed to say too much just yet, but one of the new launches we’re working on is cruelty free and vegan makeup, made here in the UK, the first range will launch in October, and is a 12 piece collection, so we can’t wait to reveal everything!
