Hey Soaper fans! It’s National Positive Thinking Day and it’s almost the weekend so that’s already one reason to think positively, if you ask us. Anyway – in honour of this most feel good of days we sat down with Lydia French, creator of The Brighter Times, to hear all about her one-woman mission to make the world a brighter place…
First of all, what is The Brighter Times?
The Brighter Times is a mission to make the world a brighter place – to spread good news, happiness and laughter, never at the expense of other people. All news is important of course, but in an unsettling time of divisive politics, war mongering and environmentally unfriendly antics, surely it’s essential to promote the awesome too; inspiring stories, feel good miracles, acts of human kindness! The Brighter Times has been created to spread the love, share the good and bring back faith in humanity – a support network of inspiration and positivity.
What’s your background and how did you come to create TBT?
My ‘working’ background has always been in design. Since graduating in Surface Pattern, my career has been very work hard / play hard and most importantly included a massive variety of experience in all aspects of design – interior, graphic, digital, styling. It has contributed to what I am today, an Art Director.
The idea of The Brighter Times came about when I noticed that reading the paper and watching the news left me feeling rather disheartened. I couldn’t understand why good news wasn’t being shared – surely it existed? So I started an Instagram account, not only as a form of self-therapy, but if it could help others feel positive or inspired, then happy days all round!
It’s great having a creative outlet on a personal level, and being a big believer in the power of the universe it’s brilliant to be able to give something back.
Where would you like to see TBT go in the future?
It’s a really exciting project because it’s an organic one. The possibilities are endless, and I LOVE that! I recently started creating greeting cards as a way to spread good vibes – special occasion or not, it’s a simple way of reminding someone how incredible they are… that includes you by the way.
The latest and very exciting element of The Brighter Times is the good news aspect – www.thebrightertimes.com. This was always the main intention so to finally have it up and running feels awesome. There are so many feel good stories out there, I love having a platform to be able to share them.
The ultimate goal is to interview Oprah – how amazing would that be! …if you’re reading this Miss Winfrey, do get in touch!
We love all the inspiring quotes TBT posts, especially ‘Be the sh*t without sh*tting on anyone else’. Do you have a fave?
Yeah that’s a goodie… Hmm, there are a few I try and live by, one that always sticks in mind however is “when you have more than you need, build a longer table, not a higher fence.”
Any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Blimey, so much! I’m constantly seeking advice also, but from personal experience I would always encourage people to keep going and respect the unexpected. Life can be complicated and throw in all kinds of curve balls, but patience and persistence can go a long way – enjoy the journey, even the bumpiest bits. Listen to others, look for opportunity wherever possible, and celebrate every victory, even the tiny ones. Life is about having fun after all!
What’s your favourite S&G product?
100% it is SCRUB ‘EM AND LEAVE ‘EM™ Body Scrub – it’s AMAZING!! It makes my skin look and feel 10 years younger, I LOVE it!! …oh, I have to give KICK ASS™ concealer a shout out too – works wonders on the eyes after pulling all-nighters working hard… and playing 😉
What song have you got on repeat at the moment?
Anything that’s going to make me feel like I’m in a music video when walking to work with my headphones on – Promises with Sam Smith is a strong contender at the moment… if in doubt I’ll always hit up the Pina Colada song – classic.
What are you bingeing on Netflix?
Schitt’s Creek with Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara – each gem of an episode is 20 minutes of comedy GOLD. Despite the name ‘Schitt’s Creek’ it can be surprisingly touching too. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Do you have any top beauty tips or time-saving hacks?
DRINK WATER – buckets of it, even when you think you’ve had enough, have another glass – shine from the inside out! Time-saving hacks… hmm, follow the two-minute rule. If something takes very little time, just do it – keep the mind as clear as possible… that includes whacking on lippy, I can’t get enough of it, instantly brightens up the face.
Finally, what advice would you give to your 15 year old self?
It’s unbelievable to think that twenty years have passed since I had my first kiss! I would love to tell my 15 year old self to fully embrace the perfectly imperfect girl that she is, to have courage in her conviction and not care so much about what other people thought of her – everything really will be okay. I’d definitely give her a heads up that time really does fly so enjoy every minute, be excited about everything, go out there and LIVE!!… And don’t kiss that first boy, wait till the next one, soooo much better…!
Thanks for having me S&G! Oh and if you have any good news that you want to share, please send me some love at email@example.comBack to Blog
